Pompeiians Flash-Heated to Death -"No Time to Suffocate"It has been discovered that most of the victims of the A.D. 79 Mount Vesuvius eruptions did not, in fact, die of asphyxiation from the volcanic ash and gas. “When the pyroclastic surge hit Pompeii, there would have been no time to suffocate,” says Mastrolorezo, of the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology. Researchers say that most of the deaths were caused by extreme heat, with many casualties shocked into a sort of instant rigor mortis. This has changed history.
